Discovered attack + removing defender
In this lesson, the discovered attack is combined with removing the defender. Removing the defender can have two purposes: gaining material and/or mating. Here we pay attention to winning material.
What should you do?
Win material by combining removing the defender ( capturing, chasing or luring away) with a discovered attack.
The white knight and rook form a battery. Removing the knight causes the rook to attack the knight on d5. However, the knight on d5 is covered by the king. By removing the white knight and chasing away the king in the process, white can safely capture the knight on the next move! 1.Ne5+! The king must now release the knight's cover: 1...Kc7 2.Rxd5.
